Dacia: Romanian roots and a focus on the essentials

Dacia was created in Romania in 1968, alongside the opening of its historic factory at Mioveni. The first car assembled there was the Dacia 1100; the 1300 saloon followed in 1969 and became a defining sight on Romanian roads. The brand’s name reaches further back, referring to the ancient territory that included modern Romania.

A Romanian marque becomes international

Renault Group took a controlling interest in Dacia in 1999. The Logan, unveiled in 2004, then gave the company a much wider purpose: a modern family car developed around affordability and straightforward engineering. Sandero arrived in 2008, followed by models such as Duster and Jogger, helping Dacia grow from a national manufacturer into a familiar brand across Europe and other markets.

Central to that growth was a clear identity: deciding what a car genuinely needs, using proven Renault Group resources and keeping the range relatively simple. Logan and Sandero established the modern formula of concentrating on the essentials while keeping prices accessible.

Growing without losing the idea

Dacia’s range has gradually become broader and more confident. Duster brought the approach to an SUV, Jogger to a versatile family car, Spring to a small electric model and Bigster to a larger class of vehicle. Its newer visual identity leans into robustness and the outdoors, but the central proposition remains recognisable: practical cars whose appeal comes from usefulness and value rather than excess.
